Goals Setting Principle | How to Set Goals Properly and Achieve Them 

Do you want to improve your life? Are you committed to changing your conditions? Many will answer yes to these questions, though it is my experience very few people are dedicated to improving their life. This is because the work is difficult, unending and filled with setbacks and disappointments.

It is often linked with unpleasant emotions and digging up the past to heal and transform our wounds. But there is no other way than doing the difficult work of attending to our personal growth. It cannot happen overnight nor in thirty days, as many books espouse because this is only skimming the surface.

Everything taking place in your life right now, whether unwanted or not, is the accumulation of your thoughts and beliefs. This is empowering for many reasons least of which means you have the power to change your future by redirecting your thoughts. How do you feel about this? Does it make you unhappy that your life's conditions result from everything you've ever thought?

Whilst I understand you might feel this way, you may also see the power to create new circumstances for your life from this point forward. As I alluded to earlier, personal growth is a long and arduous journey with many setbacks and detours. Those who embark on this journey give up because of the difficulties they face.

We can hoard more than just physical stuff. We can hoard mental baggage as well. When it comes to mental baggage, we don't even realize it. Mental baggage is the crap we carry around in our heads that either isn't true anymore, or never was, or is stuff we can't control and shouldn't even try. Mental baggage is the stuff that occupies our minds and keeps us from achieving our Goals or even working on them.

For instance, we might be worried about our job. What if I get fired? Why does the boss hate me? What am I going to do wrong today? This sort of baggage is the worst kind, because it's not even about things we can control or things that will happen. It's all about what might happen. It's all about things that most likely aren't going to happen too.

Sure, sometimes we should worry about our jobs. Sometimes we should worry about what other people are going to do. Sometimes we should worry about things that might go wrong.

Sometimes. Only sometimes.

We should plan for possibilities, but not worry over the unlikely events that we can't control. It's hard to do that. I get it. I have to remind myself of this all the time.

We also tend to dwell on "what-ifs" far too much. What would happen if I did this? What would happen if my spouse does that? What would happen if I win the lottery?

Then there's the "why did I" thoughts. Why did I do that? Why did I buy that expensive car? Why did I say that to my child? Self-recrimination is not helpful. Self-evaluation is. Asking Why without actually looking for a real answer isn't helpful. Asking Why when you're trying to fix something is much better.

We worry. We fantasize about what isn't going to happen as if it would. We dwell on the past by blaming ourselves over and over for things we may not have controlled.

All of this keeps us from working on our Goals. We can't devote mental energy to achieving Goals if we use it all up on the mental clutter. These thoughts can dominate our minds and keep us paralyzed. They keep us looking inward and backward without learning anything or fixing anything.

Goal Setting and achievement both require a tremendous amount of physical AND mental energy. We can be physically fit and fine, but if our mental energy has been drained by the mental clutter, our efforts will be less than optimal. Our results will be even worse. Which of course will drain our mental energy even more.

Mental hoarding will KILL your Goal achievement deader than you can imagine.

He began to notice that The people who within society would naturally divide themselves into two groups. While the rest, in other words, most of us, made up the majority of 80%. These numbers were obviously not exact, but close.enough. Once he has made that presumption he began to notice that the same 80-20 rule was the same when it came down to controlling the wealth in Italy during this time. He concluded that 80% of the wealth was controlled by 20% of the people. Pareto's principles, he began to notice, seemed to hold it of water in many other areas of life and that includes goal setting.

How many of you have Goals that you want to achieve in life, but as life happens you find yourself getting sidetracked by other Goals that turn out to be much more superficial than what it is you really want to achieve, but they've taken so much of your time? I know that has been an issue for me for a very long time, but until I read this particular thing, I didn't even realize it. I knew I was a bad procrastinator and I had poor time management skills but I didn't know how to change them. Until I came across the 80-20 Rule and here it is.

Take out a piece of paper and something to write with. Don't type it out on your phone or computer notebook, actually write it down. I find it is more powerful that way. Now, take as much or as little time as it takes and write down ten things you would like to accomplish. When you think about your goals, the ones that will most improve your overall quality of life when you do finally accomplish them, what are the ones that you think are the most important.

Now, take a look at the ten things you just wrote down. Out of those ten, pick two, and only two, that you believe are the ones that hold the most importance. Again, don't be hasty and take your time and as much as you need because it is a very important decision. Once you have decided then this is what you need to do as very best as you can.

You need to spend 80% of your allotted "goal building" time set in life and focus entirely on those two goals and only those two... The other 20% of this time can be left for the other eight things on that list. Simple. It is the best way to things gets done when you do it that way. I promise, you stick to that simple rule, you will find yourself accomplishing more than you ever thought you could.

No matter how hard I would try, I could never break myself of this habit. I read many. articles and even different books about how to break yourself out of this bad habit  That is before I would go back to being a horrid procrastinator. When I came across the 80/20 Rule I most likely read it half-heartedly and out of pure desperation. After all, it was so simple and easy.
